Bay Area Tech Interview Guide 2026
The Bay Area remains the highest-concentration tech hiring market in the world. The interview bar is higher here on average, but so is compensation.
Who Is Hiring in the Bay
FAANG remains the anchor: Google (Mountain View/San Francisco), Meta (Menlo Park), Apple (Cupertino), Netflix (Los Gatos/San Jose). Major non-FAANG: Stripe, Airbnb, Lyft, Coinbase, Salesforce, and hundreds of Series B-D startups.
Remote-first companies have reduced pure Bay Area hiring. The companies most committed to Bay Area in-person work are Apple and Meta. Google has a hybrid model. Fully remote companies (many fintech, devtools) compete for Bay Area candidates without requiring relocation.
The Interview Bar
Bay Area interviews tend toward the top of the difficulty range. Candidates who interview across multiple markets consistently report Bay Area FAANG loops as the hardest. FAANG companies in Bay Area offices also have more senior engineers conducting interviews.
Preparation recommendation: solve 150-200 LeetCode problems (medium and hard), complete at least 10 mock system design interviews, and practice behavioral stories for each company's specific framework (LPs for Amazon, Googleyness for Google).
Visa and Relocation
H-1B and TN visas are most common for international hires. Most FAANG companies sponsor visas for experienced hires but not for all new grad roles. Confirm visa sponsorship policy early in the recruiting process.
Relocation: most FAANG companies offer relocation packages ($10k-$30k, sometimes more for senior hires). Negotiate relocation as a separate item from compensation. Temporary housing is often included for 30-60 days.
Compensation Benchmark
2026 Bay Area SWE total compensation ranges: L3/SDE-I $200-250k, L4/SDE-II $280-380k, L5/SDE-III $420-600k, L6/Staff $600k-1M+. Most is variable (RSU + bonus). Base salaries have compressed in recent years.
Use Levels.fyi, Blind, and compensation threads on 1Point3Acres for current data. Negotiate the RSU tranche, not just base. A larger RSU grant at a high-growth company outweighs a higher base.
