Interview Day Checklist 2026
Good preparation is necessary but not sufficient. What you do on interview day separates candidates who perform at their ceiling from those who underperform despite preparation.
The Night Before
Sleep is preparation. Cognitive performance under stress is measurably worse after less than 7 hours of sleep. Do not stay up grinding problems. Review notes for 30 minutes, then stop.
Prepare your environment: test your audio/video if remote. Charge devices. Know the platform being used. Have the interviewer's email or phone number in case of technical issues. Have a glass of water nearby.
Before Each Round
Read the problem fully before starting. Ask clarifying questions. State your approach before writing code. This 3-5 minute investment prevents solving the wrong problem and gives the interviewer confidence.
State your assumptions out loud. 'I am assuming the array is non-empty and all values are integers. Is that right?' This catches misunderstandings early and demonstrates precision.
When You Are Stuck
Stuck is normal. The correct response: verbalize what you know ('I know this involves some form of two-pointer since the array is sorted'), try a simpler subproblem ('let me first solve it for positive numbers only'), and ask for a hint only after a sustained attempt.
A wrong approach verbalized is better than silence. Interviewers can redirect you from a wrong approach but cannot help you if they do not know where your thinking is.
Post-Interview
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours if you have the interviewer's contact. Brief, professional, specific (mention something you discussed).
Write down every question asked while it is fresh. Document your performance: what did you struggle with? What topics should you review before the next round? Whether you pass or fail, use it as data.
