Is getting hired just about getting lucky?

I just accepted a job, moving from DoD contracting to a Tier 2 Cloud company, and went from a 110k to 190k TC just by getting lucky that the only LC question they asked was a very well known medium. I then got asked some standard Java/systems design questions which were all fairly easy, and my salary moved up 50k. What’s even crazier is that I applied for a more junior position at the same company but my resume got the automated rejection, and yet here I am now accepting a more senior position for more money. Why is our system this way? I feel like I don’t deserve the raise I got, but that I more than deserved a phone screen for the role under this one I applied to.
