Dearest applicants, You have made it, passed the phone screens, done the take home, and now you have to come onsite. I have seen countless candidates make the technical component look easy only to seem disinterested because they weren't prepared to talk/engage when speaking about the company. At many orgs you will meet with a person like me, a leader who no longer codes but has in the past, who is likely the manager of your future boss or their group. Should you meet with me I need you to be able to carry on a conversation. I am a grey beard. I am old, likely a little younger than your parents or the same age. I will not speak with you for a long time but in the time but I can make decisions at the table. P But HackVT, I don't like talking, social is not my strong suit. No problem. A little preparation should help you. For people who talk too much, slow it down and LISTEN. Before you come onsite I want you to: 1. Read up on what we do and understand what our business is 2. Read up the role and what is required of it 3. Write down questions and bring them with you to ask Questions to please ask: 1. What can I do in this role to be successful in your eyes? 2. How do you measure failure versus success? 3. What are you doing about X competitor in your space's new Y feature? Are you looking to match it? 4. What do employees do after work? Are there any team sports? 5. How does someone grow here and what skills would you suggest?
