Fortunate enough to get into both Georgia Tech and Duke for CS, but I’m honestly super confused on what to choose! Cost is not a factor at all, since I secured a few large scholarship, and my family is willing to pay the rest at any college I attend without financial burden. My current primary academic and career goals are to pursue SWE/AI/ML internships and jobs. Research and quant are interesting, though definitely not a priority for me currently, but I’m still exploring what I want to pursue. Which option might provide me with more overall and CS-specific prestige/opportunities, and is ultimately the better choice? I’ve listed some of the pros/cons of each, feel free to take a look if you’re interested and leave your thoughts in the comments. Thanks so much! Duke is elite in nearly every industry (#7 nationwide above most ivies) while GT (#33 nationwide) is elite in almost every engineering, being ranked #3 for engineering and #5 for CS, while Duke is around 15-20 for CS. Duke is overall much more prestigious and has a stronger brand name. Duke CS is a smaller department and not the focus of the university, while CS at GT is one of the core majors. GT is a large public school with less selectivity and less resources for the individual student. GT has more rigorous and technical coursework for learning CS to prepare me for jobs and interviews, but also more difficult courses and more competition among students for course registration and CS resources. GT has been an industry feeder for big tech for many years now and has lots of co-ops and internship options. Duke is a smaller private with a better quality of life and much more individualized resources available, and still sends many graduates to Big Tech/FAANG. Almost everyone at GT is in CS/tech or grinding LeetCode and internships, while Duke is spread across diverse industries with many in business, econ, humanities, biomedical, etc. At GT, I can get my undergrad and masters in 4 years (3+1). At Duke, it’s 5 years. Duke will allow me to pivot into almost any field and still be a target school while GT is more restricted to engineering. Overall, students are very happy at both schools, though Duke definitely has an advantage for dining/housing/amenities/campus and general happiness.
