Is it unusual to be heavily recruited by an IT consultancy, then let go 2 months later because they could not find you an assignment? Is it a sign of the times?

It is so confusing, I mean they heavily recruited me I did not reach out to them, now I am once again without a job. Lucky I do not have family as that would of been fucked up
