I got a verbal job offer few weeks ago. While we were negotiating, I figured I'd let them know I have a trip planned in 3 months where I will be away for 4 weeks. I told them I can't change the trip but I can either start after I come back or I can start right away but I will need to be away. Eventually they got back to me and said they are pulling the offer because neither option is ideal for them. So I asked, would it have been better if I didn't tell you about the trip? They said no, because the CEO has to approve vacation for that length and he would not have approved it. I was shocked. This is a company with 300+ employees. To hear vacation approval goes all the way up to the CEO is mind boggling to me. They have been looking to fill the position for probably close to 6 months. Part of me feels like I dodged a bullet there. Edit: Plans were made after I had applied. They reached out for interviews months after I had applied. I'm not out of the US but it is a US company. The comments here are clear the attitude towards time off is very different in the US.
