Facial hair etiquette?

Tl;dr - How should I handle the facial hair behind the jaw line? I could use some help with how I should trim up. I’m not the most professional looking person (septum piercing, stretched ears, tattoos, unnaturally colored mullet, beard), but I can clean up very well when I want to. The problem I’m facing is I’m not sure what all I need to be touching on with facial hair. It used to be easy, just shape, flyaways, trim, etc. - But I’ve been trying to do something different with my beard (shaved 90% of the bulk from my neck), but I dunno what the best look would be there. Should I trim it down to a certain length, clean shave, leave it?
