Comparing my interviewing experience to Tinder dating for the past 45 days
Interview Experience
Hey all 3.5 professional years experience here, close to 4. I don't come from a CS background, was selftaught/bootcamp. Had a year of unprofessional unpaid non profit volunteer work that doesn;t really count as "real" experience. I just wanted to share my experiences interviewing, compared to dating :P I was also interviewing for a mix of mid to senior level Front End Engineer roles. I would get recruiter emails/LinkedIn messages daily, at least 2 - 3 per day. I applied for a few applications on some of the smaller non FAANG company. I stayed away from FAANG, cause I'm not that great at LeetCode. I can do easy, but mediums & hard are too difficult. 35 Recruiter calls AKA First Dates (So easy to talk yourself up on the first date, be sure to throw impressive numbers/metrics to recruiters (scaled application to 1000% more load, created a feature that reduced processing time to 90% ) 30 Hiring Manager calls AKA 2nd Dates (The 2nd date they can sniff through your bullshit and dig deeper. Answering your behavioral in STAR format is a MUST. You can actually fail behaviorals and I was butthurt everytime I did. Also, acting charismatic, cheerful, energetic, will always earn bonus points for being a likeable person). 25 Technical Screens AKA 3Rd Dates/Home Base. This is where things were difficult, evaluating someone's performance in the bedroom in 30-60 minutes with someone else watching is stressful, anxiety prone. I do better with take home tests and not live coding. I didn't pass a lot of these. 4 On-Sites AKA Meeting the parents. These are the hardest parts, prepare to be judge heavily on anything you say. Although they sorta want you to succeed, they're also looking for ways to reject you. 2 Offers AKA Marriage proposals. Anways, its a super hot market for mid to senior engineers. Im getting a 40% base pay bump. Take advantage of the hot market while you can and good luck!
